The Gas Monkey Ferrari F40 sold at Barrett-Jackson for $643,500, which is cheap for an F40... Even after they get it repainted, fix the headlights, and track down some original wheels (or better looking ones) they should still be in it for less than if they bought one under normal circumstances (which according to Hagerty is $1.1 million) .

Here's your link.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

EDIT: Apparently I had the wrong link and price up, it actually sold for $643,500 vs $742,500. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (Thanks for the info, Aaron James!)

Is that an actual LM or does it just have the LM wing?

I'd still be terrified of this car. With the shady stiff they did to "repair" the frame, this is a nightmare car, and if you can afford $750k for a bad F40, you can afford $1.2m for a good one.

Its always descdescribed as a real LM. I saw it at an event in Japan. Here is a video on youtube.

The guy that did the chassis work is Ferrari and Lamborghini certified (I'm sure they don't hand those certifications out to just anybody) and built it completely to (and better than) factory tolerances. I'm sure it's okay.

And sure, someone with that kind of money probably could afford to pay $1.2 M for a different F40, but there's no denying that this person got a good deal. Just because it's been modified doesn't mean it's worthless (it's an F40 after all), so we should just be glad that it's back on the road because it was pretty fucked up at one point.

What's wrong with the color? Here's another black F40 and it looks fine. It has silver wheels, but IMO the black wheels aren't bad.

yeah, that definitely looks like a real LM. I don't care for the metallic blue wrap, but that can come off :P

Nothing is "wrong" with black, I was just saying that because I'm a little more of a "purist" you could say and prefer the F40 in red.

As for the wheels, I just don't really like them much, personally. Different strokes for different folks, some will like it and some won't.

IIRC (and I haven't seen that episode in ages), they had the certified guy do some work, but they also had issues he didn't have time to touch.

That led them to a bunch of hammering and welding to get the frame straight-ish, and it still didn't line up, so they had fun relocating the engine mounts.

I'm sorry, but I'm not spending nearly a million dollars on a sloppily restored, wrecked car.

I would think that from a picture but its really beautiful in person. Its stunning, its not done in a douche bag Dubai kid kind of way.

I disagree, it´s not a steal. You´ve got to look at it from a collectors view. The history of the car determines its (resale-) value to a great extent. I´d go so far as to say that the history of this car actually matters more than the state of the car.

This car does not have a great history. Restoring the car does not erase this history. (And I´m not even talking about its current state, which I find appalling).

It says right there in the listing (and it's in the episode as well) that the chassis was restored within and better than Ferrari's tolerances. The frame is totally fine now.

And it's ok, you don't have to spend "nearly a million dollars" on this car, because it has already been sold. I also don't think a car built as good or better than the factory intended is in ANY way "sloppily restored". It also technically isn't wrecked anymore because it's been restored, but that's just technicality.

While I like pop-up headlights as much as everybody else I really like the vented look, even if they are not functional.

Fair enough, but the rows of round LEDs in a rectangular housing looks weird to me. A more traditional look would probably fit the car better, in my opinion.

Last year it "sold" for 745k. This year "Reggie Jackson" sold it and it hammered for 585k. There is rampant speculation as to whether or not Reggie actually bought it last year or if it was just for the show. The Look on Dennis and Richards face this year when they realized it was selling for waaaaay less than what they wanted was priceless.

This years result. http://www.barrett-jackson.com/Events/Event/D…

Sure, from a collector's stand point, you're right, it's not the greatest example of an F40. From a standpoint of someone who would actually drive the car, it's a great deal. It's a running and driving F40, and being able to get it for less than probably any other F40 in similar running and driving condition is the definition of a good deal.

I agree with you in that I'm not a huge fan of the car's cosmetic appearance. However, I addressed this by mentioning that a better set of wheels and paint job would make this car look better (read: closer to original) and probably help it's value from both a standard buyer's perspective and also a collector's perspective.

I caught the end of that episode the other day. If I remember right, somebody was offering them $900,000 for it and they turned it down because the owner changed his mind and wanted to keep it.

Restored/repaired still doesn't replace everything. Even if we assume that the work was perfect, crash-damage doesn't just go away.

Obviously, we disagree, but I just can't get my head around spending that much money on a car like this, when I can spend just a little bit more (relative) to get one without any of the questions.

Would you spend $7500 on a salvage title normal car, over $12k for a perfectly clean one? I don't think I would, regardless of how well repaired the salvage title car appears to be.

Apparently I was actually mistaken earlier in saying that it sold for $745K, as that was last year. It sold most recently (yesterday or today, I think) for $643K. That's pretty easily half of a normal F40, making the price difference between this car and a normal one that much greater, and, in my opinion, making this an even better deal seeing as how it's even cheaper and the headlights are fixed.

And it's not really fair to compare a normal, salvage titled car (that hasn't been worked on to the extent that this car is) to this F40. It just isn't the same thing.

I completely agree on how weird the LED headlights look. Subtle LED tail lights could look good though.

Kinja'd!!! WhereAreMyPants > PushToStart

I think that might be the reason we disagree. I don't see how this is in any way different than a normal well-repaired salvage situation.

On your regular car every tolerance is looser than on this car, and the quality of work your decent shop can do is equivalent to what Honda/Ford/etc do at the factory. This specialist is certainly higher-quality than "Joe's auto-body", but the car was built to a much higher standard, too.

I just keep coming back to the fact that if I can afford a $650k (or $750k, or whatever) occasional use toy, then I can almost certainly afford a $1-1.2m one.

Look at the shit-show Demuro had to go through to sell a perfect Ferrari that's worth one tenth what a clean F40 is.
